Northern Ontario is home to North America's most abundant Boreal Forests. Aside from the forestry business, the area is rich in byproducts including pine cones, fungi, medicinal herbs and edibles. WHAT ARE NON-TIMBER FOREST PRODUCTS?  NON-TIMBER FOREST PRODUCTS (NTFPs) are generally defined as goods obtained from forests without harvesting whole trees. Some sources define NTFPs to include recreational opportunities.  Other sources include hunted and trapped animals as NTFPs, but these days the term generally refers to plant-based NTFPs. 
There are thousands of NTFPs worldwide.  It is estimated that Canada has 500 NTFPs.
